QuickBooks Online vs. QuickBooks Desktop
QuickBooks Online
QuickBooks Online (QBO) exposes a full REST API via the Intuit Developer platform. This is the version we integrate with programmatically — using OAuth 2.0 for authentication and the Intuit API for reading and writing customers, invoices, payments, items, accounts, and journal entries in real time. QBO is the right choice for any business that needs automated, bidirectional data sync between an external application and their accounting system.
QuickBooks Desktop
QuickBooks Desktop (Pro, Premier, Enterprise) does not offer a cloud REST API. Integration options are more limited: IIF file imports for batch data loads, the QuickBooks Web Connector for local sync via QBXML, or third-party connector tools like QBD Sync or Dataswitcher. We advise on the right approach for your Desktop version and build the import/sync pipeline accordingly — though we generally recommend migrating to QBO for any new integration project.

Primary integration target — REST API covering customers, invoices, payments, items, accounts, journal entries, reports, and webhooks. Intuit's v3 API with JSON responses and minor version headers.
OAuth 2.0
QuickBooks Online authentication via Intuit's OAuth 2.0 implementation — authorization code flow, token refresh logic, and secure credential storage so the integration stays connected without user re-authentication.
Laravel
Backend framework for the integration middleware — OAuth flow handling, Intuit API client, data transformation logic, error handling, retry policies, and the queue workers that drive async sync.
quickbooks-php / Guzzle
PHP-based Intuit API client. We use the quickbooks-php SDK where it reduces boilerplate, or a custom Guzzle HTTP client for cases where we need precise control over request construction and response handling.
Redis & Laravel Queues
All sync operations run as queued background jobs via Laravel Horizon — preventing API rate limit breaches, handling retries on transient Intuit API errors, and ensuring sync failures don't block your application's main request cycle.
Webhooks & Event Log
QuickBooks Online sends webhooks when entities are created or updated in QBO. We handle these to trigger reverse sync back into your application — with a persistent event log for debugging sync discrepancies.
